CTAO Mission PDF Print E-mail

As a community based, not for profit organization, the mission of the The Canadian Tibetan Association of Ontario (CTAO) is to promote the rights of all individuals, in particular, those of Tibetan Canadians and to encourage their full and equal participation in Canadian society; to create an environment in this country in which the rights of individuals are fully recognized and protected; to promote understanding and cooperation between Tibetan Canadians and all other ethnic, cultural and racial groups; to encourage and develop in persons of Tibetan descent, a desire to know and respect their history and culture; and to develop community resources through voluntary participation and community networking.

In today’s increasingly diverse and multicultural Canadian society, the goal of the Canadian Tibetan Association of Ontario is to promote cross-cultural understanding and friendships between the Tibetan community and other cultural groups in Canada.  This will be achieved through education and awareness projects; networking to build friendships; shared community ethnic/heritage events and festivals; and participation with other ethnic groups in recreation and sporting activities.  These cross-cultural experiences will foster and enhance mutual respect and tolerance between other cultural groups and the Tibetan community.

In the early 1970’s, approximately 500 Tibetans sought refuge in Canada, making them the smallest immigrant group in the country at the time.  Approximately 350 Tibetans settled in three main locales within Ontario; namely, Belleville, Lindsay and Toronto.   Upon adjusting to their new way of life and settling into this multicultural country, to which they now called home, the Tibetans sensed an increasing need to sustain their culture and heritage.  In 1978 they formed an organization called the Canadian Tibetan Association of Ontario (CTAO).  On March 5th, 1980 the CTAO was formally registered and incorporated under the Ontario Corporations Act as a non-profit organization within the Province of Ontario.   The Canadian Tibetan Association of Ontario is recognized as a formal organization by the Tibetan Government in Exile.  It is an official establishment, representing all Tibetans in Ontario (with the majority of members residing in the Toronto area), regardless of race, ancestry, colour, creed,  place of origin, citizenship, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, family status, disability, receipt of public assistance, political affiliation, record of offences or level of literacy.
